A fire killed 19 people in Beijing’s southern suburb where migrant workers had for a long time called the cheap illegal structures their “home”. Following the tragedy, out of concern for the migrants’ safety, claimed the city government. A mass eviction started. Hundreds of thousands people were driven out from their rental place and dumped in harsh winter air.
